Recycle Those Cards!

Hello parents and students!

Soon we will be celebrating the New Year-2011! Many of us will be making New Year Resolutions. I use this time to reflect on the goals that I've set and how I can improve and continue those goals. One of my goals is to continue to look for simple ways to help protect our Earth.

The JR High students have already placed a recycle bin in our classroom so that our students can recycle their papers. Our students love recycling their unwanted papers! Many students also have brought in plastic bottles and aluminum cans to take to Mrs. Rackley for recycling.

Mrs. Boehme has an excellent idea for recycling Christmas cards. We used the front cover of the card and glued it to a piece of construction paper and created a new card. Mrs. Guzman mailed the cards to her brother-in-law and his troop. It was a great idea! We would like for you to send any cards that you no longer need. We will save them and use them again!

Happy Recycling in the New Year!

Invention, Technology, and Change Notes

I am so pleased with the I-Search Plans that I've seen. Many students are asking when can they start jotting down notes! I'm sending home the Invention, Technology, and Change Notes as a guide to begin taking notes. I've explained that it is only a guide. They may add or use any part of the page for their notes. Please be sure to keep all papers together in the green I-Search folders. (It is all part of the grade.)

Save a Cereal Box!

We will begin a research process called I-Search. A Parent Letter and Rubric will be sent home this week. We will be working on the research in class but we will need some of what is started in class to be completed at home. The final product will need to be completed at home using a cereal box. I will send home more information on that after the Thanksgiving break. Your child will be choosing an inventor or individual who has made an impact on communities.

Wallwisher is Pretty Cool!

I have unsuccessfully been trying to show my students how to get on Wallwisher in school. I will have to check with technology and see if our tech issues can be resolved. I would like for my students to try Wallwisher at home. (With your approval, of course!) I will be on Friday evening @6:30. Here are some things to remember: You will have to hit your refresh button every now and then. Students can drag sticky notes around the wall so that it is a little more organized. Any old sticky can be removed by hitting the little x. Remember to scroll to the left or down just in case there are some sticky notes hiding. Only appropriate notes will be approved! Use your initials when posting.

It's Time!

It's time to start practicing multiplication facts. I recommend that your child visit one of the links on my blog to practice math facts. You can also purchase a set of flash cards. If you've noticed, my door is covered with the 3's facts along with the answers. My students must give me a multiplication fact as they leave my classroom. This is something you can do at home. We will soon begin our 1 min tests. I will start with the 2's, 5's, 10's, 11's, 9's and so on. I am not going in order. I do it this way because these are the facts that are easier for students to remember. It is easy for them to see a pattern. Ask them to show you the 9's trick that I've showed them using their fingers. See if they remember the 2nd trick. (9x7= one less than 7 which is 6, 6 plus what number equals 9? 6+3=9, See the answer? 63)

Welcome Mrs. Boehme

I would like to welcome Mrs. Boehme back to 3rd grade.  She will be replacing Mrs. Mordica and will be my partner. I will greatly miss Mrs. Mordica.  She and I worked together for the last 3 school years.  Mrs. Mordica has moved to the Houston area and has taken a job with Liberty ISD. I am excited to team up with Mrs. Boehme.  She too was part of our 3rd grade team last year.  We will work together to ensure a smooth transition for our students.  I am confident that they will do just fine!

Off to a Great Start!

We had a great first week! Please have your child practice addition and subtraction. There are many websites where your child can practice. This week we began with place value.  Give your child 5 and 6 digit numbers and have them practice reading and writing them.  Ask them the value of each digit.  For example, what is the value of the 5 in 254,078? They should say 50,000.  We will continue next week with place value.
